Seas At Risk's work involves it in a number of different legal, political and regulatory forums, including European Union institutions, the United Nations' International Maritime Organisation and Food & Agriculture Organisation, the OSPAR Commission, the North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission and the North Sea Conference process.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the international regulation of shipping. Seas At Risk has long been a regular participant in the environmental work of the IMO using the Observer seat of one of its member organisations - Friends of the Earth International - to access this important forum.

UNFCCC
The United Nation's Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is the principle international legal and regulatory initiative to tackle climate change. Seas At Risk has only recently become involved in this forum and the focus of its work is inclusion of emissions from marine fuels (bunkers) in future mitigation targets.

OSPAR Commission
The OSPAR Commission for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North East Atlantic is responsible for managing work undertaken as a consequence of the 1992 OSPAR Convention. The Commission is made up of the governments of 15 Contracting Parties and the European Commission. Seas At Risk has been an Observer at the OSPAR Commission since 1992.

NEAFC
The North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) is the competent organisation responsible for recommending measures to promote the rational exploitation of fish stocks in the North East Atlantic. The Commission is made up of delegations from five Contracting Parties to the 1982 Convention on Future Multilateral Cooperation in North East Atlantic Fisheries. Seas At Risk has been an Observer at NEAFC annual meetings since it opened its doors to NGOs in 2002.

Seas At Risk has recently moved its head office to Brussels and this reflects the growing importance of the European institutions to its work and to the protection of the marine environment generally. The Commission, European Parliament, Permanent Representatives, and the European Court are all important foci for Seas At Risk's work.

The North Sea Conference process was the initial focus of Seas At Risk’s work and has remained an important part of its activities. The most recent meeting was in Gothenburg in 2006 and Seas At Risk was present to promote a number of its key issues.

FAO
The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is the United Nations agency that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. The Committee of Fisheries (COFI), a subsidiary body of the FAO Council, is the only global inter-governmental forum for international fisheries and aquaculture issues. Seas At Risk used its Observer seat for the first time at the 2007 COFI meeting.

Regional Advisory Councils
Regional Advisory Councils (RACs) were set up to provide greater regional stakeholder involvement in EU fisheries management. The main task of the RACs is to provide the European Commission with advice on fisheries management in their specific regions. The overall objective of the RACs is to work towards integrated and sustainable management of fisheries resources, based on the ecosystem approach and the precautionary principle.
