Global Mercury Treaty not strong enough
Geneva, 19th January 2013. After four years of intense negotiations, a global treaty has been signed to cut mercury pollution. However the treaty has been criticized by SAR member the European Environmental Bureau for not going far enough.

Brussels 27th December. Unilever has agreed to phase out micro beads from all its personal care products in a great success story for the marine environment and Seas At Risk member organisations the North Sea Foundation and MCS.

Tuna Ambassadors to the rescue
Duffel, 14th December 2012. Sea First Foundation, a SAR member and Belgian-Dutch NGO, has begun a campaign to encourage restaurants and stores to stop selling all species of tuna, with volunteer ambassadors hitting the streets to spread the word.

UK fails on marine conservation
London, 13th December 2012. Seas at Risk member, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has accused the government of a complete lack of ambition to preserve the seas. Out of a recommended 127 marine conservation zones in UK waters, the government has declared only 31 will be protected by the end of next year, none of which will have all activities banned.

Marine mercury threat highlighted at UN talks
Brussels, 7th December 2012. Seas at Risk member the European Environmental Bureau has highlighted the widespread problem of mercury pollution in the world’s oceans and has called on the UN to take immediate action.

Porpoises under threat as microbeads get support

French court upholds Total Erika conviction
Paris, 25th September 2012. To the relief of SAR French member organisation Surfrider Foundation Europe, France’s highest court has upheld the conviction of oil major Total in the case of the 1999 Erika oil spill.

BUND draws out ship waste comic book winner
Berlin, 9th October 2012. SAR German member BUND has announced the winner of their comic book competition that saw almost a hundred proposals highlighting the problem of marine litter and the inputs that come from ships.

Brussels, 24th August Brussels 2012. Spanish organisation the ENT Foundation has become a new Sea At Risk member. The group’s work largely focuses on research interests related to environmental affairs, development and international cooperation.

Slovenian NGO tackling marine litter joins SAR
Brussels, 13th August 2012. Seas At Risk welcomed new member organisation Evo Vitae at its Annual General Assembly held earlier this year. The Slovenian NGO’s marine focus is on tackling marine litter and current campaigns involve awareness raising, beach cleans and monitoring.

MyBeach is OUR responsibility
The Netherlands, 27th June 2012. This June saw SAR member the North Sea Foundation launch their ‘MyBeach’ initiative across the Dutch coast – a project that aims to tackle marine litter by encouraging beach goers to clean up not only their own mess but also the trash brought in by the sea.

Comic competition puts ‘Nothing Overboard’!
Berlin, 8th February 2012. Seas At Risk German member BUND has launched a comic competition to raise awareness amongst seafarers on the problems of ship waste dumping and marine litter. The competition invites graphic designers to provide illustrations by the end of April this year.
