Politics over reason – Deep Sea management proposal under pressure
Brussels, 21st March 2013. The European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee has decided at the last moment to delay the adoption process of a new deep sea access regime. This may leave the EU stuck with its outdated deep sea legislation for several additional years, putting deep sea fish stocks and vulnerable ecosystems at further risk.

Fisheries ministers discard ambitious approach
Brussels 27th February 2013. After heated negotiations going on until the early hours, EU Fisheries ministers have finalised their negotiation position on the discard ban and some other aspects of basic regulation of the CFP, outlining a pretty dire approach to resolving the problems associated with discards and overfishing.

Acidification concerns over scrubber wash-water
London, 8th February 2013. A proposal from industry to weaken the pH standard for ship exhaust-gas scrubber wash-water discharges to the sea from pH 6.5 to pH 3.0 has failed to win the support of a key IMO committee.

Ministers set deepsea fishing quota higher than advised
Brussels, 29 November 2012. Today the Council agreed on deep sea fishing quota for 2013 and 2014, and set them higher than proposed by the Commission for half of the stocks, ignoring the vulnerability of these stocks.

Parliament provides early Christmas for Fisheries
Brussels, 18th December 2012. Christmas has come early this year for European fish stocks as the European Parliament’s fisheries committee voted on the most important file of the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy. On the key topics such as restoring fish stocks to healthy levels, setting fishing limits according to scientific advice, and ending discards, MEPs have expressed their will to lead European fish stocks to a more sustainable future.

EU countries lack Marine Directive ambition

EU countries are not being ambitious enough in implementing the Marine Directive, national targets for 2020 are too weak and there are major shortcomings in coordination at the international level. EU Fisheries Ministers want harmful subsidies
Brussels, 23rd October 2012. At the October Council meeting, European Fisheries Ministers have reached a provisional agreement on the future of EU fisheries subsidies, setting aside €975 million for controversial subsidies that maintain or increase the current overcapacity of fishing vessels and thus contribute to overfishing.

Removing disincentives key to ending ship waste dumping

NGOs call for limits to Blue Growth

In a position paper sent to European ministers ahead of Monday’s expected ‘Limassol Declaration’ on the Integrated Maritime Policy, Seas at Risk and 18 other ENGOs have called on ministers to respect the ‘limits to blue growth’ and ensure that strategies to strengthen the maritime economy do not come at the expense of the marine environment.

Amsterdam, 21st August 2012. A major new campaign to tackle microplastics entering the marine environment has been launched. SAR has signed on to help solve the problem of micro beads found in 100’s of personal hygiene products that can end up down our plug holes and into our seas.

NGOs urge change to proposed EMFF funding priorities
Brussels, 27th August 2012. The negotiations on the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund are currently gathering speed. In a joint position paper, BirdLife Europe, Greenpeace, Oceana, OCEAN2012 and WWF are calling for a shift of funds away from subsidies that incentivise and support overfishing to funds that support sustainable fisheries and healthy marine ecosystems.

Fisheries Committee commits to MSY

Advice to fisheries ministers for their May meeting

New study lists possible marine protection measures
Brussels, 26th March 2012. A study commissioned by the European Commission has analysed different possibilities for policy measures aimed at improving the marine environment. The study’s recommendations are a source of information for Member States when implementing the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and include examples of cost effective measures for the protection of the marine environment.

Discard ban still on and external dimension agreed

At the Fisheries Council meeting yesterday, EU Ministers spoke out in support of a discard ban despite a concerted effort by France and Spain to get rid of the proposal in the ongoing reform of the Common Fisheries Policy. Ministers also took the first formal step of agreement on aspects of the CFP reform by adopting conclusions on the external dimension.

Sustainable fishing is possible, good policy is crucial

In an open letter sent to EU Ministers last month, SAR and FISH welcome the Commission proposal for regulation on the common organisation of the markets in fishery and aquaculture products as well as for a new Maritime and Fisheries Fund. However, the groups point out several caveats that need attention in the on-going reform of the CFP and that need urgent attention before the end of 2012.
