Marine litter on agenda for European Maritime Day
Gothenburg, 22nd May 2012. Seas At Risk will be speaking at the annual European Maritime Day conference this May to raise awareness of marine litter and the need to set ambitious reduction targets under the European Union’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
The event is being held as part of a three day conference that is covering a wide range of issues relating to Maritime affairs.
Seas At Risk, the Horizon 2020 programme, KIMO International, Waste Free Oceans and the State Secretary of Sweden Anders Flanking will be speaking during the agenda item titled ‘Reducing marine litter for the sake of the environment... and blue growth?’ at 10.00am on May 22.
European Maritime Day comes ahead of the July 15 deadline where Member States of the European Union have to finalise their marine litter reduction targets as required under the only EU piece of legislation that obliges states to reduce marine litter in order to achieve Good Environmental Status by 2020.
