EP committee vote on MSD

Brussels, 11th October 2006. The first step in the process of strengthening the European Commission's proposal for a Marine Strategy Directive (MSD) was taken by the Environment Committee of the European Parliament on Tuesday (10th October).

Seas At Risk welcomes the report of Ms Lienemann and the adoption of a series of amendments to the draft Directive that will substantially improve the instrument's ability to protect European Seas.

The amendments adopted include amendments in line with the demands of the joint-NGO coalition working on the issue, of which Seas At Risk is a participant. Key amongst the amendments are those requiring Member States to achieve good environmental status (GES) by 2017, and for a defintiion of GES to be included in the Directive. The general shortening of the timeframes involved is also welcome.

The Plenary of the European Parliament will consider the draft Directive when it meets on 13-16th November.
