In a collaboration between the Oerol festival and SAR member the Waddenvereniging, the Wadden Sea island of Terschelling this June became a site not only of musical and artistic expressionism but also of marine environmental awareness raising.

The annual 10 day festival is usually focused solely on theatre, live music and the visual arts but this year performers were also urged to consider the concept of environmental sustainability in their work.

The involvement of the Waddenvereniging saw Twitter messages sent out each morning with the location and timing of flashmobs on different parts of the island with the purpose of bringing festival goers together to focus on the dynamics of the island, the landscape that changes daily, the tides and the influence of the wind.

The festival organisers also had artists use the waste collected on the beaches of the island for performances and had speakers discussing issues regarding the 'plastic soup', sustainable fishing and agriculture.
